Hello Claire!!!

We celebrated our little Claire turning two a week after her birthday, with a Hello Kitty party! It was so much fun and we were so blessed to have our family and friends come play and celebrate her birthday!

The table
I had so much fun making the decorations and desserts for this party! Pinterest is full of so many cute ideas...I sometimes get in over my head with so many things I want to do! I love to try new things and I love "doing it myself"! Even if I could buy it- I'd rather make it myself! So I watched some Youtube tutorials on pipping and royal icing and made these hello kitty cookies! It was my first time actually pipping and they weren't perfect, but they turned out pretty cute!

These little Hello Kitty cake pops were the hit of the party! My in laws gave me a cake pop machine and recipe book for Christmas, so I new I wanted to make some for her party! I found this tutorial on Bakerella and thought they were so cute that I had to try them! I've seen other Hello Kitty cake pops that really just didn't look like Hello Kitty at all (eyes too small and whiskers not in the right place... I'm a bit of a perfectionist) but these looked just like Miss Kitty! While they were time consuming- they did turn out pretty cute and really tasty too!

"C" is for Claire

The wreath: one of my favorite DIY details!
Cupcake time! I made chocolate and confetti cupcakes and I made cute little cupcake toppers from a free printable I found on the interwebs :-) I  changed the colors and added some text and matted them on the teal and red card stock! Voila! I love free stuff! And I'm actually getting the hang of photoshop!

She licked her frosting right off her cupcake!

Always dancing!

This party was fun because it was so low key in terms of activities. The kids jumped in the trampoline, played on the swings and slide, and I set out a couple Hello Kitty games they could play whenever they wanted- I didn't have any "structured games," but it was really fun and the kids had a great time! Most of them are four and under so they are still easy to entertain!
bowling and ring toss games
I made these little Hello Kitty headbands for the girls (also an idea from Pinterest) but I made my own ear template and bow. Maybe I'll get around to posting those tutorials one day :-)
Hello Kitty ears for all the girls!

Of course Claire wanted nothing to do with them! They looked cute on the other girls though :-)

Thank you to our friends and family who came to celebrate with us!
We had such a fun time celebrating our sweet Claire- Hello Kitty style!

Claire Marie turns Two!

Today my little Claire Marie turns Two years old!

She is such an incredible little girl.
She talks in full, perfectly articulated sentences.  She is strong and determined, but also so loving and sweet. She is completely potty trained. She loves Jacky more than anything, and wants to play whatever he is playing whether it is Ninja Turtles, Playmobil Knights, Cars, or Transformers- she wants to play too.  She loves her brother but she is also such a girlie girl.  She loves her three tiny babies, and is almost never without one of them.  She loves pushing her babies in the little umbrella stroller, and she will "bake" for hours in her play kitchen.  She loves books and for awhile, Caps for Sale was her favorite.  She would take it to bed and sit in her crib "reading it."  She'd shake her little finger and say, "You give me back my caps" and then make the monkey sounds.  Now she loves, If I were an Owl. Claire also loves to do art. She loves painting, Dot Art, coloring, and even just writing with a pen and lined paper. She holds her pen perfectly, and carefully writes her "notes" or "lists."

She is very sensitive and very aware of things that are beyond her age. Whenever either of the other kids is hurt or sad, she is the first one to say, "Are you Ok Jacky" and pat him on the back gently. Or she'll look at me and say, "Emmy's sad" with such concern in her big brown eyes. She is beyond her years in expressing her feelings. She still talks about the "punkins" that scare her or that "shadows scare me too" as she puts it. I'm thankful she is so able to communicate what she is thinking and feeling.

One of my favorite things about Claire is that she always has a song in her heart.  All three of my babies all loved music from the early months of their lives, but little Claire especially loves to sing. She is always walking around singing- usually its, "Lets go fly a kite, up to the highest height, and send it soaring" or "I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me.." or one of the Daniel Tiger songs like, "I like you, I like you, I like you, just the way you are" or "Making something is one way to say, I love you!" She loves Daniel Tiger.
She also loves little "Emmy Doodle Kookoo."  When Emmy was new Claire started calling her Emmy Doodle or Emmy Doo for short, which I thought was the cutest thing ever, and the rest of us kind of picked up the nickname and now she is frequently called Emmy Doo. So we have Jacky Roo, Claire Bear, and Emmy Doo. Claire is such a good "big" sister. When I found out I was pregnant with Emmalise, I was worried about Claire being so little and so in the middle, but she was made to fill that specific roll in our family.  She is still such a baby, but she lovingly kisses and hugs Emmy.  She is a little mommy already, and is teaching Emmalise everyday.  It is a great responsibility to be a big sister and I know she will handle it with confidence and grace. She will teach Emmy more than Sean or I will be able to and she will understand her better.  They will share secrets and giggles and even tears; and I know Claire will be (and already is) a shinning example of the Lord's love to her siblings and to all who know her.

She is strong enough to handle Jack in all his full-speed, non-stop boy energy and she keeps up, and lots of times, she's the one in charge! To say she holds her own is sort of an understatement. It's amazing to see her personality and how perfectly the Lord created her to fill that place in our family.

Claire is funny and silly, so incredibly smart, so passionate and determined, and her eyes twinkle when she smiles. She looks just like her Daddy, but her personality is a lot like her Mommy.  We are so thankful to the Lord for our little Claire Bear! She is such an incredible blessing and we could not imagine our lives without her precious smile, her giggles, her loves and sweet little singing voice.

Happy 2nd Birthday "Sweet Little Heart" (as Jacky used to call her).

We love you so much our tiny girl!!

Potty Training Cliffs Notes

One of my goals for January was to get Claire potty trained.  Potty training is one of those necessary evils that parents dread; and no matter how painfully long (or short or messy) the good news is that all kids eventually get potty trained.  So yes, there are special cases, and every child is different, ect, ect.  but I really do believe this method works. I decided to write out how I did it for those of you who have asked about it.  I totally believe in this method because it worked for my kids.  If it didn't work for yours- you didn't do it right. Haha, just kidding. Like I said, it worked for my kids, but that doesn't mean it will work for every child.

First of all there are a couple things you want to be sure of before you even attempt potty training.

1) Is your child verbal enough and aware enough to potty train?

Both my kids were both talking in sentences by 20 months, so they were already saying things like, "I have poo poos" or "I meed a new diaper" so they were communicating enough both in words (duh) but  also in concept. I knew they had an understanding of going potty.

If your child speaks few or no words...I would not suggest trying to potty train yet.  {remember- this is just my opinion, from my own experience}. However, they do say that the ideal window is 18-28 months old. I did Jack and Claire at 22 months.  The closer you get to them turing 3 the harder it is (so I've heard).

2) Are you ready/able to commit to the process?

I basically followed the "Potty train in 3 days or less" method, but does that mean you are done after 3 days? um. no.  Think of the 3 days as like the boot camp to kick off the potty training process. Does it mean after the 3 days they will never ever have an accident- maybe- but most likely no.

For those mamas wondering what I did exactly...Here it is.

I start with 3 solid days at home. Potty training was the only thing on the agenda. Like many areas of parenting, consistency is key.

                             Step 1:
Tell them first thing in the morning, "all done with diapers"!  This method is no diapers, no pull-ups, nothing; as much as possible. So for my kids they just ran around naked from the waist down. It has been pretty chilly lately though, so for Claire I had her wear an undershirt and jammie shirt, and knee socks :-) After the first day, when she was chilly, she wore loose jammie pants.

I totally think that trying to potty train using pull-ups {during the day- I do use them at night} is pointless. It feels just like a diaper so they don't get the point that they can't just go potty in their pants anymore. Going pant less- they get it, really fast.  They won't like the pee pee going all over.

Step 2:
Get a little potty seat for them. I'm not kidding- the one I have is the best. It sings and says "hooray" as soon as they go in it. It's great. Plus it has a removable seat that will fit on a real toilet when they are ready, and they can use it as a step stool.

Sit them on the potty and say, "Pee pee and poo poo only in the potty!"

*I think how you approach the topic,
and speak to them during the process is
 half the battle.*

Step 3:
Give them juice or milk, and lots of it the first few days. You want them to go to reinforce the process. So I gave Claire juice in her bottle every little while (no she doesn't usually have a bottle all day- but I knew she'd drink it if it was in her bottle). Then you take them to their potty every half hour or so and say, "Its potty time!"

Don't ask if they need to go.
The answer will almost always be no until they are older and are fully potty trained. Just tell them it's time.

Step 4:
You really have to be vigilant and watch them carefully for those first 3 days. If they start to pee pee, grab them and get them on their little potty.  If they get a little into the potty, you celebrate. I mean really make a big deal out of it! We did the "potty dance" and sang little celebratory chants like, "Oh yeah, you did it! Go, Claire, Go Clarie! She did it! In the potty! Yeah!!!!" Literally, they love it.  I then told her how proud I was of her- like 100 times.

Then I did something you may or may not want to do: gave her a potty treat. Some parents don't like using treats as incentive, but hey, it works and it makes it fun. So I give her an M&M or a Trader Joe's Gummie Bear each time she got anything in the potty.
{Jack got a treat too, so he was involved in the process- he encouraged her, reminded her, and celebrated with her too!}

Step 5:
If they have an accident, don't scold them. You don't want to make them feel bad about something they have been doing naturally for the last 2 years {just going potty wherever, whenever}. You also don't want it to turn into a battle of the wills. They are not being naughty. They have to learn. So help them learn.

Tell them in stern, serious voice, "Pee Pee or Poo poo only goes in the potty."
Don't say, "It's ok" because it's not.
Say "Next time run to the potty, pee pee only goes in the potty!" If she had an accident, I still had her sit on the potty afterward to see if she had anymore. And to reinforce that that was where she should go potty.

You want to celebrate and encourage their success.
They will feel so proud of themselves!

So that's basically it.
No pants, lots of liquid, put them on the potty for potty time every little bit, get them to the potty when they start going, and repeat.
For at least 3 solid days.

After those first few days they should get it.
Claire now says, "Poo poos!" anytime she needs to go potty and then we run to her potty and she goes. There may be "set backs" though. Don't get discouraged. She did really well all week then we had one day where she had 3 accidents in 2 hours. I was bummed. I thought we had gone backwards and I was getting frustrated. But then I just took a deep breath, and kept on helping her get to the potty, celebrating her success and going on.

After that, on her own she would tell me when she needed to go, and we haven't had any accidents since. We've even gone out and no accidents! It just clicked. She gets it and I don't think we'll have any more problems. I will still remind her, and help her get to the potty when she says she needs to go. I will take her little potty with us- wherever we go- for a while. And I'll keep celebrating her success!!

Sidenote: My theory on nighttime potty training- once they are waking up dry every morning, then they stop wearing a diaper or a pull-up.
Yes- I put a pull-up on her for nighttime.
Not nap time though. I have her go pee pee before her nap, and she hasn't had any accidents. I don't really worry about the nighttime thing. That will happen naturally as they continue to get the point that we only go in the potty.

Good luck and happy potty training!

Mmm D'licious: Easy Chicken Tortilla Soup

So it's been cold in San Diego. Today it barely reached 50 degrees, and I'm colder by nature I guess, so much so that my husband (and sometimes mother in law) give me a hard time about always being cold while they are sweating bullets...I guess they are cut out of the same cloth. A thicker, more suitable for winter, cloth (wink). But it has been colder than normal for January in San Diego; usually we have a heat spell and its about 80 degrees on New Years, but cold blooded or not, I have actually enjoyed the winter-like (for San Diego) weather, and it definitely gave me a hankering for some warm, hearty Chicken Tortilla Soup! So go to Trader Joe's, get your ingredients, get your crockpot out and your sweat pants on (but don't go to Trader Joe's in your sweat pants) and enjoy!

Easy Chicken Tortilla Soup

Ingredients:

3-4 half Chicken breasts
Chicken broth
1 can Trader Joe's Diced Fire Roasted Tomatoes
1 can Trader Joe's Organic Black Beans
1 can Trader Joe's Diced Fire Roasted Chilies
I box Trader Joe's Creamy Corn and Roasted Red Pepper Soup
Taco Seasoning {I use Lawrys- but Trader Joe's has one too}

Directions:

Cook Chicken in Crock Pot 4-5 hours on low either covered with Chicken broth or water with a sprinkle of seasoned salt (lawrys), garlic powder, and a little Caldo de Pollo.

Once it is done- shred it. It should literally just pull/fall apart {the beauty of the crock pot}.

In a large pot combine soup, tomatoes, chilies, beans (drained), and shredded chicken.
Sprinkle taco seasoning to taste.
Bring to a low boil.

Garnish with tortilla chips, grated sharp cheddar cheese, and avocado slices.

Or just enjoy plain.

Either way- this is a perfect rainy day comfort food!

Serve with Trader Joe's Cornbread!!

*substitute the oil in the directions on the box for a 1/2 cup apple sauce. Healthier, and tastier!!

Don't you love Trader Joe's? I do.

Seven.

Seven months.  She's crawling...fast. She's pulling up on things. She's giggling. She's saying....MAMA!! She wasn't even seven months yet and she stated saying Mama! This is by far the most exciting thing for me because my other two sweet babies said Dada first! I love their Daddy too, and of course he was over the moon about it, meanwhile Mama had wait to hear that sweet word from other my babies! Emmalise is a very gentle little soul. She is such a happy baby and loves watching Jack and Claire. She's in a big hurry to catch up and get into the mix. She is so tiny, she has the most feminine little features, everything about her is girly. One cute thing she's actually been doing for a while is lounging on her side. I guess it started before she started crawling, and she'd kind of teeter on her side. Now she does it all the time and just hangs out.

We did sleep training with her this month, which is my least favorite part of parenting (maybe after potty training)...but she has done really well.  With Jack we put him into his crib and let him cry around 4 months, with Claire it was 6 months, and Emmy is 7. We have very limited space at the moment and Claire is still in her crib, so Emmalise sleeps in the pack n play in our room, next to me, which makes the whole "cry it out" scenario difficult. Plus, for a while I just would feed her so she didn't wake up the other kids, but after a few nights of being up every hour with her and getting absolutely no sleep at all, I decided it was time....even if it was difficult. The first night she cried for 50 minutes, and then woke up around 4:00 am and cried for about 10 minutes. The next night she only cried for a few minutes then she was asleep! Now she only cries some nights, but only for a few minutes. She wakes up around 5:00 and I feed her and she goes back to sleep till 7 or 8. Pretty good I'd say!

This is her lounge position. She sits like this all the time. It's so cute, and its just her own little thing.

 Her big brother adores her!

Here are a few of my phone photos from the last month...

Emmy at her last check up!

 Happy Girl!

Bye Bye cradle...we don't want her going overboard!!

 Christmas Baby!

Blurry loves from Claire and Jacky!

These two are going to be best friends. Claire loves crawling around with her and is always saying, "C'mon Emmy, C'mon!!"

Jack called her his little "Sugar Cookie Girl"

We love every minute with this tiny girl.
